2BeAPilot highly recommends the how2become guides for detailed information on selection procedures, as well as some great inside tips!
Instrument Meteorological Rating (IMC)

The IMC rating allows a pilot to fly in visibility worse than the minimum allowed for a PPL holder. More specifically one can fly in conditions where the earth's surface is not visible. These are known as instrument flight conditions.

It must be noted that the IMC is a lesser qualification than the full Instrument Rating (it can not be used as a replacement). For example it is does not allow the pilot to fly in restricted airspace.

The Syllabus

The course will start with the basic instrument flying skills, including straight and level flight, turns, climbs and descents.

You will then progress to instrument navigation. The following navigational aids will be taught:

  • Instrument Landing System (ILS).
  • Automatic Direction Finder (ADF).
  • VOR Navigation.
  • Non-Directional Beacon (NBD).
  • Surveillance Radar Approach (SRA).
  • Distance Measuring Equipment (DME).
  • VHF Direction Finder (VDF).

These aids will mastered using instrument holds, procedural let-downs and route flying.

IMC - Training Requirements

To obtain a IMC rating requires a minimum of 15 hours dual training. Of which 10 hours must be flown using the aircraft's instruments alone. A screen will normally be used in the aircraft to simulate the instrument conditions.

When the student is confident a flight test will follow. This will usually consist of cross country navigation, an instrument hold and a procedural let down.

The student must also pass one multiple choice ground exam to obtain their IMC rating,

PreRequisites

To apply for a IMC rating one must:

  • hold a valid PPL(A)
  • have at least 10 hours Pilot in Command (PIC) experience since obtaining their PPL
  • be in possesion of a Class Two Medical Certificate.

There is no age restriction in applying for a IMC rating.

Validity

The IMC rating is valid for 25 months from the date of issue.

The IMC rating is valid in the UK only.
