Jet Orientation Course
throttle

The Jet Orientation Course manages the transition from propellor types, to aircraft capable of performing at much higher speeds.

There is no official jet rating sanctioned by the CAA, however professional flying schools will offer jet training in the form of a Jet Orientation Course (JOC).

Most Jet Orientation Courses last for around 1 week and will include classroom training as well as practical training. Practical training will take place in a simulator and can include aircraft such as the B737, 747 depending on the provider.

Since the JOC is not a course sanctioned by the CAA then it is very much up to the flying school to set the syllabus. A typical syllabus will include the following:

  • Autopilot training
  • Flight director
  • Advanced instrumentation (EFIS)
  • Aircraft handling
  • Emergency procedures (e.g. engine failure)

The JOC takes place in a multi-crew environment, therefore some providers will require you to complete a multi-crew cooperation (MCC) course before. It is also possible to combine the MCC and JOC courses into one, but you will need to check with the providers.

Most airlines will require some form of jet orientation training before they will consider your application. The JOC is an excellent way to fulfil this requirement. It is also reasonably priced at around £2500-£3500.
