Sea King

The frill of handling the controls of a helicopter is something that will live with you for a long time. There is just something about helicopters that can make you proud to be helicopter pilot.

Many people believe that flying helicopters is difficult. While it does take longer to master the controls of the helicopter than an aeroplane. With a little bit of commitment and patience then the average person will be able to handle the controls.

Helicopters hold some unique features that make them great to fly:

  • Takeoff Anywhere
  • Hover in Mid-air

What do I need

The minimum age limit for obtaining a licence is 17, although you can start your training from 16. Some people do thier traning when their 16 and get their licence on their 17th birthday.

You will require a class 2 Medical, which is not to difficult to pass. It is reccomended you take the Medical before you make any financial commitments to training just in case.

A minimum of 45 hours training is required before you can obtain your licence. 10 hours of solo flying must be included withihn these 45 hours.

How much will it Cost

Flying helicopters is one of most expensive forms of aviation. Expect to pay in the region of £250 in the UK for 1 hour of flying tuition. Over 45 hours this can accumulate to a region of £9000-£10,000.

Once you have your licence the chances are you will be eager to show off your skills to your friends. To rent a helicopter may cost you between £150-200 per hour at UK prices.

PPL (H)

The licence for a helicopter is a JAR Private Pilots Licence (Helicopter). It consists of both practical flying tuition as well as exams.

As mentioned above a minimum of 45 hours is required including 10 hours of solo flight. Before you go solo you must have passed a Medical, passed tthe Air Law exam and be confident in Radio Telephony.

To fly cross country solo then in addition you must have passed the Navigation and Meteorology exams.

Ground School

To gain a helicopter licence PPL(H) you will need to pass a number of theoretical exams. Subjects include:

  • Aircraft General (Principles of Flight)
  • Air Law
  • Flight Performance & Planning
  • Human Performance & Limitations
  • Navigation & Meteorology
  • Radio Telephony

Do not be put off by the ground exams, with a little bit of hard work you should be able to pass with little trouble. If you hate exams then just think of the rewards of obtaining your own helicopters pilots licence.
