Nothing can be further from the truth. Yes you do need money to fly, but there are many options on what to fly and how much you want to fly. You can learn to fly from as little as £500 for gliders to £6000 for a light aircraft.
You will need to pass exams to gain a pilots licence. However the exams are at a level such that the average person should pass with a little time and effort into their study.
What type of aircraft you would like to fly will depend on two factors, cost and personal interest. The choices range from areoplanes, helicopters to microlights and gliders.
Many people have a desire to fly areoplanes, however this can be expensive and you might find the cost hard to bear. Don't be put off, there are far cheaper alternatives which can be just as fun.
You could learn to fly gliders, which can be very cheap if you join a local club. Most gliding schools are run by volunteers and offer free tuition, as long as you are prepared to contribute some time to the club. The only financial cost is usually just a annaul membership fee which is not too expensive.
On the opposite end of the scale you could learn to fly aeroplanes. This is definitely a lot more expensive but the rewards are endless. Expect to pay around £6000 to gain a private pilots licence in the UK.
This depends on what you want to fly and at which level. The good aspect of avaition is there are so many kinds of flying and each type is tailor made for someones pockets. You will need some money to fly, there is no question about that. But you do not always need a bulky pocket as there are plenty of cost effective forms of flying.
To fly aeroplanes you will need a private pilots licence costing around £6000 in the UK. Once you have a licence expect to pay in the region of £100 to £150 to rent a plane per hour.
On the other end of the scale gliding offers great value for money. You can get to solo for as little as £500 at most clubs. Once you have got to this stage then you pay for each launch and the time you are in the air. Launches can cost about £6 and for the glider expect between £20-30 per half hour.
If you want to go all the way and train to be an airline pilot then this will in no doubt be very expensive. With modern day tuition it can cost up to £60,000 to become fully qualified.
