The Silver Badge is internationally recognised and builds the pilots skills in the core ability to glide for long periods and over long distances. It is also the minimum badge required to enter competitions.
The badge requirements include a 1000 metre height gain, 50 KM of straight flight and a flight of more than 5 hours in duration.
Before attempting the 50 KM distance requirement the pilot must have completed their Bronze Badge and Cross Country Endorsement.
Being internationally recognised the Silver Badge is not awarded by the BGA but is issued by the Federation Aeronautique International (FAI). This is the badge which you require if you wish to go on gliding holidays abroad, badges below this (Bronze) are only recognised in the UK.
Ultimately the Silver Badge aims to make the pilot self confident to a level where they can fly long distances without any radio or navigational assistance. In fact the 50 KM distance element should meet this requirement.
